    ABOUT PAUL BUTLER

Paul Butler is a novelist, editor, freelance journalist, and educator.

His 2009 novel, Hero (Nimbus Publishing), explores the way characters deal with human-made catastrophe and weaves through the Newfoundland sealing disaster of 1914 and the First World War. His 2008 novel, 1892, is set around the mystery of the 1892 inferno that consumed a large portion of St. John's. Other recent novels, NaGeira (2006), published by Pennywell Books (Flanker Press), Easton's Gold (2005), and Easton (2004) are set in seventeenth century Newfoundland, England, and the Caribbean. They explore aspects of the NewWorld's "pre-history" and speculate on the influences that may have gone into creating a sense of destiny in nascent New World societies.

Stoker's Shadow (2003) tells the story of Bram Stoker's surviving family members dealing with the dark legacy of the novel, Dracula.

Paul writes book reviews for the Globe and Mail, Books in Canada, and Atlantic Books Today. He contributes to numerous publications including TheBeaver, Saltscapes, and Canadian Geographic.

Through the company HB Creativity, Paul gives workshops and tutorials on all aspects of the fiction writing craft. Visit www.writingworkshops.ca for the complete schedule and workshop descriptions.

Originally from the UK, he settled in St John's in 1994, via an 18-month spell teaching English as a second language in Greece. He lives in St. John's with his wife Maura Hanrahan, the writer, and his daughter.
